In ancient times the Oracle was consulted as a source of inspiration, revelation or prophecy. In the Greek myth, Oedipus consulted the Oracle at Thebes who told him he would murder his father and marry his mother, which indeed, all unknowingly, he did. The tradition of State Oracle persists to the present day, notably in Tibet. The Oracle is the prophet or soothsayer, one who knows what others do not know and who is thus consulted about future events. (Painted between 1964-1984)
